How are they only called ‘Lanyards’ and not by any other name? 
To understand this, there is a bit of history and a pretty daring past to be learned.
To begin with, way back 15th century, French soldiers and pirates used straps to keep their weapons close at hand. The straps are made of rope or cord, which were usually used by soldiers to attach pistol, sword, or whistle to their uniforms while climbing their ships or engaging in war. As time developed, those simple straps were modified to lanyards with customized attachments that made the functionality of the military duties easier. Even during World War II, some of the militaries continued to apply the lanyards to bring all kinds of equipment to their field. Thus, the word lanyard originated from the French word ‘Lanierie’, which means strap.
From practical to ornamental
As centuries rolled on, people started to carry around electronic devices like phones, USB memory sticks, and cameras with the help of lanyards. But today, this versatile item became mainstream to corporate identities as brand recognition, marketing, and advertising. The most common feature of usage is to display ID badges, where there is a little room to print logos.
